Meet Carmela, an extraordinary individual with an unwavering passion for advocating and supporting vulnerable members of our community. Carmela's selfless dedication to making a positive impact in the lives of others has been evident throughout her remarkable journey.
Carmela's exceptional contributions have garnered recognition and acclaim. She has received prestigious awards, including the Ted Tremayne Business Award, the Professor Ian Frazer Humanitarian Award, and the Corporate Citizen of the Year in the Brisbane City Council 2023 Lord Mayor's Australia Day Awards. These accolades stand as testaments to her unwavering commitment to serving others and making a meaningful difference.
Throughout her journey, Carmela has collaborated with various charitable organisations, including Broken to Brilliant, Fr Chris Reilly Youth Off the Streets, Meals on Wheels, Lions International, and Uniting Care Community. In 2015, she took a bold step by opening Silky Oak Espresso, a series of cafes that provide employment and empowerment opportunities for vulnerable community members. The cafes, located in Gordon Park (opened in 2015), Strathpine (opened in 2016), and Chermside West (opened in 2018), have become safe havens where individuals with disabilities and the long-term unemployed can acquire valuable business skills, enhancing their employability and fostering a sense of community.
We mustn't forget the Little Blue coffee van, which was established in 2016 and extended the reach of Silky Oak Espresso. It became a symbol of Carmela's commitment to spreading positivity, support, and outstanding coffee in various locations, amplifying the impact of their mission. The coffee van was instrumental in multiple charity events, supporting the community and leaving a lasting impression on all those who crossed its path.
Carmela's ability to bring communities together to achieve common goals served as a profound inspiration and source of empowerment. Together with Glen, they accomplished even greater feats as they continued their journey of supporting and uplifting the lives of the most vulnerable in our community.
